When You speak, when You move,
When You do what only You can do,
It changes us,
It changes what we see and what we seek!
– “Spirit of the Living God,” Vertical Church Band
I came to the worship night on March 4 with high expectations — which were all exceeded by the work God did that night in so many hearts! I had not been able to attend the last gathering (December 22), so I was eager to come back to this place of freedom which worship opens for me.
The Holy Spirit was immediately present as we began to open our hearts to God’s glory. Seeking him through worship freed me to raise my hands in awe and surrender. All my plans, my worries, my fears — all was laid at God’s feet! Together we let go of the shore and voyaged into the living water Jesus offers.
Throughout the night, our worship was sprinkled with shouting, spontaneous songs, Bible verses, encouraging words. Seeing the Spirit move in the souls of those around me was so reassuring. Even the youngest there were sharing the words God was laying on their hearts. Such a strong sense of unity — seeking God together — was over the whole night.
There were a few themes, too — we learned about calling out to God. We learned about courage. We learned about the love that overcomes all fear.
In the week since the worship night, though, one other theme has kept tugging at my heart. It’s kept popping up in everything! It’s living water.
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.Psalm 1:1-3 ESV
But there the Lord in majesty will be for us
a place of broad rivers and streams…
Isaiah 33:21 ESV“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:38 ESVFor the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Revelation 7:17 ESV
We are nourished by this water; this water gives us peace, strength, and power. It will make us bear fruit. What better water is there?
The deeper into this water we go, the more we experience of God’s unending grace and mercy toward us. The more we fall in love. This is what God made us for: to experience his glory and to enjoy him forever! And he holds his arms out to us. Joy is waiting for us.
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being…”
Acts 17:26-28 ESV
